Initial implementation supported by implementation research

Since 2021, the Department of Nutrition within the Ministry of Health has collaborated with a range of nutrition partners—including technical organizations and leading academic institutions—to introduce MMS in selected districts in the context of implementation research. This effort is coordinated by a locally-formed Indonesia MMS Taskforce hosted by the Indonesia Nutrition Institute and supported by the Summit Institute of Development, Vitamin Angels, Airlangga University, Hasanuddin University, Padjadjaran, and University of Indonesia. The Taskforce is charged with (i) facilitating stakeholder meetings and consultations to support advocacy, policy change, and creation of a local supply, (ii) providing technical advisory support to national health officials to help interpret the evidence and formulate a national MMS policy, and (iii) develop publications, policy briefs, reports, and other resources to support use of MMS in Indonesia.

Initial implementation of MMS began in several districts in 2019, supported by Airlangga University and Hasanuddin University. Building on this experience, the University of Indonesia, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Vitamin Angels conducted formative research in 2022 to understand contextual factors, enablers, and barriers to UNIMMAP MMS use, and to inform the development of implementation strategies to achieve high MMS uptake and adherence in Indonesia.

A supply readiness assessment was carried out by Sight and Life, Vitamin Angels, and Padjadjaran University in 2021-22 to support the creation of a local production hub and market-based distribution by 2025. Additionally, Sight and Life is exploring formative research around distribution of MMS to understand women’s experience, from the clinic to the product design.
