16 October 2023 – The meeting report of the Africa Regional Meeting on Maternal Nutrition and Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 12-14 July 2023 has been released.
The meeting, which was co-hosted by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH)-Ethiopia, the Africa Union Commission (AUC), and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) in close collaboration with World Vision International – Canada, and the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies (HMHB) Consortium focused on sharing experiences in policy, advocacy, and implementation.
The report covers maternal nutrition, particularly in humanitarian settings, and the advocacy efforts and financing to prioritize maternal nutrition in the continent. Further, it provides an overview of the evidence, policy frameworks, and implementation experiences on MMS as well as the manufacturing and supply of UNIMMAP MMS in the region. Finally, it outlines a way forward to scale up MMS and improve maternal nutrition in Africa.
