Initial implementation supported by implementation research

The introduction of MMS in Tanzania follows a comprehensive systems approach and is supported by an extensive implementation research approach, which started in October 2020. A supply readiness assessment & formative research was carried out by Sight and Life in 2019 and 2021 respectively for UNICEF.

The Government of Tanzania, UNICEF, and other nutrition partners will undertake a demonstration pilot in 1 district. The introduction of MMS will be part of a continuum of services through community, school and health contacts to adolescents and pregnant women to strengthen the promotion of dietary diversity, food fortification, and micronutrient supplementation. Imported UNIMMAP-MMS is being distributed since October 2021.

The National Technical Advisory Group (TAG) has successfully led policy implementation. MMS has been integrated into the logistics system for better tracking, and its introduction has strengthened antenatal care nutrition services. However, challenges include the need for systems strengthening and addressing socio-cultural drivers and barriers. The continued use of Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) for anemia treatment has hindered full MMS adoption, and innovative funding mechanisms are needed to accommodate the higher costs of MMS. Lessons learned include the importance of government leadership, strategic partnerships, and building on existing systems.
