Initial implementation supported by implementation research

Several organizations are supporting efforts to explore the introduction of UNIMMAP MMS in the context of the 2020 WHO recommendation. Vitamin Angels conducted a landscape analysis from 2021-2022 to understand the status of maternal micronutrient supplementation (including MMS) in India through a literature review, assessment of policy environment, and key stakeholder interviews.

This initial assessment identified a strong need to undertake a detailed review of India-specific maternal micronutrient supplementation programs and policies. To address this, Vitamin Angels is partnering with INCLEN Trust International to (i) synthesize evidence on the prevalence, trends, and determinants of maternal micronutrient deficiencies in India and collate strategies towards managing them, (ii) understand the current state of national programs that target micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant women, and (iii) conduct expert group consultations towards developing a roadmap for addressing micronutrient deficiencies among pregnant and lactating women in .

Further implementation research is being explored to understand the barriers and enablers to improve micronutrient supplementation uptake in India. This will include designing and testing implementation strategies towards strengthening the delivery of micronutrient supplementation in pregnant women through India’s existing antenatal care system.
