30 November 2022 – As a part of the virtual Coffee and Chai Chat series on #HiddenHunger organized by the Micronutrient Forum, a chat on ‘Reflections on the data estimates of 2 in 3 women suffering from micronutrient deficiencies (MND) and priorities for action‘ was held on 29 November 2022 with Special Guest, Dr. Purnima Menon, Senior Director, Food and Nutrition Policy, IFPRI. The chat was hosted by Dr. Martin Mwangi, Program Lead, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Consortium (HMHB).
A recently published report in Lancet Global Health states that 2 in 3 non-pregnant women of reproductive age suffer from at least one MND worldwide. Though regional prevalence levels are highest in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the paper reports surprisingly high levels of MND in high-income countries, affecting 1 in 2 women in the UK and 1 in 3 women in the US.
The session, attended by over 70 participants from around the world, focused on priorities for policy and advocacy to support the reduction of MND in women, across all life stages. A brief presentation by Dr. Menon was followed by a question-answer session with the participants.
